Fill a bunch of vases with peonies (or line your walls with paintings of them).
But if you are in search of love this Valentine’s Day, maybe you should follow the advice from one of my favorite Marlene Dietrich movies.
Get LuckY in Love with this Valentine’s Day Advice from a Classic Marlene Dietrich Movie
I recently purchased the Marlene Dietrich collection, and amongst the films is a quite charming tale about a World War II soldier hunkering down with a gypsy in the forests of Germany as he tries to evade the Nazis.
Dietrich, in what might be my favorite of any of her performances, croons a song that states that if you wear golden earrings, love will come to you.
Golden Earrings Lyrics
There's a story the gypsies know is true
That when your love wears golden earrings
She belongs to you
An old love story that's known to very few
But if you wear those golden earrings
Love will come to you
By the burning fire, they will glow with ev'ry coal
You will hear desire whisper low inside your soul
So be my gypsy
Make love your guiding light
And let that pair of golden earrings
Cast their spell tonight
Over the past 69 years, the Golden Earrings tune has been covered by no fewer than 50 artists, including Peggy Lee (who scored a hit in 1947), Bobby Darin (1964) and Willie Nelson (1983).
so DID HOLLYWOOD JUST MAKE THIS WHOLE GOLDEN EARRING THING UP?
Honestly, when I think of golden hoop earrings like the ones worn in the film, the first thing that comes to mind are pirates. It turns out there are a lot of legends surrounding this fashion statement, although none I found had anything to do with love. The most popular myth behind the jewelry trend is that sailors would wear them as a form of payment. If they died, just pull off the earring and bury them -- it was like pirate funeral planning.
That is far less romantic than the Marlene Dietrich iteration.
YOU NEVER KNOW, MAYBE MARLENE DIETRICH GOT IT RIGHT. SO WHY NOT TRY IT?
Ok, so it may not actually bring you romance this Valentine's Day, but you never know. Gold adds a chic touch to just about any outfit. It transforms the little black dress into a glamourous statement.
Guys, if you are looking for Valentine’s Day gift ideas for your lovebug, take note. Ladies, let me know if your golden earrings bring you love!
